Sun Life Malaysia Brighter Health Campaign Finale!

03 November 2018, Sun Life Malaysia Brighter Health Campaign Finale

Congratulations to all 20 pairs of mothers and their children for the hard work and dedication for the past 6 months and last Saturday we have come to the finale of the campaign. One of the mothers won the campaign by being the "Biggest Loser", as in total she had lost 5KGs since the day she signed up as part of the Brighter Health Campaign.

After months of consistent health check to keep the mothers aware of their health condition, the mothers and children made the conscious effort in their diet choices and lifestyles, especially in cultivating the habit of exercising regularly. The bi-weekly fitness session also helped the community know that actually, they are stronger than they ever imagine, and that motivates them to exercise further.

During the Finale program, our biggest highlight was the rowing machine session where Sun Life Malaysia together with our community, marked a record of the “Most Number Of Participants In A Rowing Machine Session” in the Malaysian Book of Records.

We wanna thank Sun Life Malaysia for your thoughtfulness, creativity and dedication in making this Brighter Health Campaign a remarkable and memorable one!

On behalf of our community, we want to thank Sun Life Malaysia for empowering them to live healthier and shine brighter!

HOPE worldwide Malaysia is proud to be on board with Vaseline on "The Vaseline Healing Project" which is a Global CSR initiative, partnering with Direct Relief, its Global Mission is to heal the skin of 5 million people by 2020, by providing dermatological care to those affected by adverse living conditions and recovering from emergency situations.

The Vaseline Healing Project, for the first time in Malaysia. Partnering locally with prominent volunteer relief organisation HOPE worldwide Malaysia, the initiative is aimed at helping underprivileged and vulnerable communities who live in poverty, and victims of emergency situations in Malaysia, to regain healthy skin.

“HOPE worldwide Malaysia is very glad to be a partner for The Vaseline Healing Project, an amazing program where we can bring dermatological care to those in need; from the urban poor community to Orang Asli villages, and the underserved community in East Malaysia. This healing of a thousand miles from Vaseline will help bring much required improvements in skin care to many families in need,“ said Darick Wong, Country Director of HOPE worldwide Malaysia.

Since our organization's establishment in 2000, HOPE worldwide Malaysia has been bringing medical aid to urban poor community and as well the Orang Asli community through the Sentul Free Clinic of HOPE & Free Mobile Clinic. Skin infection is one of the common ailing among those who lived in poverty. Lacking of clean water and hygiene condition of the living environment are one of the main causes. It directly affected the community day to day life especially for the children. Skin infection seems not a life-threatening disease but it greatly affected a person's self-confidence and appearance.

The Vaseline Healing Project in Malaysia will support HOPE worldwide Malaysia’s Medical Program, a service for underprivileged and vulnerable communities that not only provides them access to basic healthcare, but also education about sanitation and hygiene. Vaseline is also encouraging its consumers to be a part of this initiative by providing a platform for them to help through the Vaseline Healing Project:

Now is your part to a make a difference: From 1st June – 31st July, 2017, consumers are able to donate to the Vaseline Healing Project in Malaysia by purchasing any Vaseline product. With every purchase of a Vaseline product, RM1.00 will be donated to the Vaseline Healing Project.

Together let us pass the healing all around the globe for the poor and needy.

Thanks to Sun Life Malaysia for raising a total of RM 257,000.00 to both Diabetes Malaysia and HOPE worldwide Malaysia for the implementation of the community programs that benefit the poor and needy community in Malaysia. Part of HOPE worldwide Malaysia's focus is creating awareness and providing Free medication & treatment to Diabetic patients from low income families through the Sentul Free Clinic of HOPE which is established in year 2000.

Last Sunday was indeed a great day as we see a crowd of more than 2,000 participants gathered together for the SHiNE Resolution Run! As quoting from the speech delivered by Mr. Kevin Strain, President of Sun Life Financial Asia, the SHiNE Resolution Run achieve two important life goals - Health and Financial Planning. It is definitely not easy to keep up to our resolution of being healthy by engaging in regular exercises like running. But as we keep it consistent, just like planning to save for your financial security, bit by bit, you shall able to see the result in a long term process.

Not only that, one more goal that this event have achieved is raising a total of RM 257,000.00 to two non-profit organizations. We would like to congratulate Sun Life Malaysia for the great success of this Event!

HOPE worldwide Malaysia was very honored to be a part of this event, as 8 of our youths who were also the youths from Sun Life Malaysia Brighter YOU Basketball Clinic participated in the 5KM Fun Run! We also set up our booth there to greet all the fellow runners there! Among the runners, we managed to meet the Sun Life Malaysia's Brighter YOU Volunteers who used to volunteer in our community programs! Another excitement was to meet celebrity VJ - Nazrudin Rahman, who was also the Host for the event.

Our gratitude also goes to Mr. Ooi Say Teng, CEO & Country Head of Sun Life Malaysia for your continuous support towards our organization. And as well to Ms. Tricia and the dedicated team of staff who has been with us throughout all these years in organizing every event in the Brighter YOU CSR Campaign and the awesome SHiNE Resolution Run!

MaybankHeart first Crowdfunding Campaign - Health Screening and Early Prevention for the Urban Poor

Thanks to all generous donors who supported our very first Crowdfunding Campaign on MaybankHeart, because of your donations, we manage to kick start the Health & Wellness (Health Screening for early prevention through Blood Test) Campaign since the month of November. As of December, 22 patients were benefited from the Blood Test screening. And the numbers continue to grow! Our gratitude also goes to Maybank who provides and establish this crowdfunding platform for us and many other NGOs!

One fine afternoon, Fazreena came to our clinic to seek medical consultation about her health condition. And we discovered she has an abnormally high blood sugar level, hence we conducted the Blood Test screening on her. Eventually, the blood test result shown that she is a high-risked diabetic patient. Then immediately we started a series of treatment, advice on her diet for prevention and monitor her situation continuously.

Fazreena is a Single Mother who has three children who are 19, 18 and 12 years old expressed her gratitude for the Health and Wellness Campaign has saved her from the destructive health condition at the nick of time.  Early prevention steps has secured Fazreena’s health for her to continue to work to earn a living and support her children’s education.

Lallitha who has been coming to the Free Clinic since two years ago has just become one of the beneficiaries of the Health and Wellness Campaign. Lallitha, 51 years old, has no awareness about her health condition until our doctor conducted the blood test on her that she is diagnosed as a hypertension and diabetes patient. Lallitha was grateful for the Health and Wellness Campaign that saves her from a worsen stage of her health, as her husband is working as a lorry driver, and his salary could only be sufficient to support the family’s daily living. Subsequently, the consistent and free-of-charge early prevention treatment has secured a peace of mind for her and the family.

Retired nurse keeps working to serve the poor

For senior citizen Mona Chin, nursing is not just a career but a calling to help the poor and needy.
Having worked for more than 30 years as a nurse before retiring, Chin had initially felt that her work was far from done.

After her retirement, Chin, now 72, began using her time and energy to serve people in need.
“I don’t worry about money or not being able to enjoy my sunset years

“If I can do just this much by serving them in a compassionate, respectful way, my life will be more meaningful,” she told The Rakyat Post

Chin currently is the nurse as well as the clinic manager of the HOPE worldwide Malaysia’s Free Clinic in Sentul, founded in 2000 to provide free medication and consultation.

Hope Worldwide Malaysia is a branch of Hope Worldwide, an international non-profit, non-religious, charity organisation based in the United States.

The clinic has grown to serve more than 56,000 underprivileged patients to date.
Trained in the United Kingdom, Chin began as a nurse at Universiti Hospital in Petaling Jaya before moving on to work at Singapore’s Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

“It was 15 years ago. I was in Kuala Lumpur to visit my brother and that was when I chanced upon an advertorial in a newspaper by a charitable organisation, looking for a trained nurse.

“Helping the poor and needy was something I thought about a great deal. I thought that this would be the opportunity for me to give with both hands and overflowing heart.

“I have held in my hands all that the world can give. In return, I want to give and give generously,” she said.

Although Chin’s efforts are concentrated in Sentul, her work speaks to the larger issue of urban poverty in Kuala Lumpur, where slum areas inhabited by people who come under the Poverty Line Income (PLI) group continue to exist while the number of homeless people has risen almost two-fold.
She hoped her contribution would help inspire people to help the less fortunate on their own free will.

“Volunteerism for the common good can move and alter people in subtle ways because, like love, it speaks through and to the heart,” said Chin.

Mona's undying passion continues to burn as she eventually took up the role as a Trainer, empowering Youths in the Clinic Apprentice Program, a Youth Empowerment Program that aims to train youths from 18 to 25 years old, who are interested in securing a career in medical related fields.

A Huge Thank from all of us here in HOPE worldwide, the mothers and the children, for Sri Kota Specialist Medical Centre's (SKSMC) thoughtfulness and effort in planning and conducting the Hand Cleanliness Workshop and as well, distributing groceries to 20 poor families. Last Saturday, a total of 16 volunteers from SKMC were here, to conduct Hand Cleanliness Workshop to reach out to 43 children and total 20 underprivileged families.

The hand cleanliness workshop was specially conducted to educate the children from 6 to 12 years old about the importance of hand cleanliness and how to take care of the cleanliness of their hands in daily lives. Total of 43 children from 20 poor families attended the workshop. To make the workshop lively and creative, SKMC showed a few animation videos and as well performed a dance, on how to wash their hands effectively and thoroughly, to make sure the most of the germs were eliminated through the hand washing.

After the workshop, the children and their mothers had some time in doing coloring and cross words puzzle. And then SKSMC prepared some gifts to reward and encourage the top three winners for each category.

After the workshop is done, the children and their families together with SKSMC volunteers had a great time enjoying the afternoon refreshment.

Before we called it a day, SKSMC had specially prepared groceries for 20 families. With this, on behalf of the children and families, we would like to express our gratitude to Sister Foo and Grace and all fellow volunteers who putting effort, in planning the workshop, and also making time to practice the hand washing dance for the children, the dance had indeed successfully created the awareness in the children, to take good care of the cleanliness of their hands. End of the event, we can see the children happily learning the dance from the volunteers.
