Vaseline Continues to Help Underserved Communities Regain Healthy Skin

28 July 2018, Vaseline Healing Project 2018/19 Official Launching with HOPE worldwide Malaysia

Vaseline and HOPE worldwide Malaysia are partnering for the second consecutive year to bring access to basic medical and dermatological care closer to underprivileged community through the Vaseline Healing Project.

The Vaseline Healing Project was created to bring dermatological and basic medical care to heal the skin health of five million people from vulnerable communities nationwide by 2020. For the second year in a row, Vaseline Malaysia is joining the global movement in collaboration with HOPE worldwide Malaysia to enable underserved communities nationwide to regain healthy skin.

The rising cost of living tops the list of concerns for nine out of 10 Malaysians.  The price hikes on goods and services such as food and housing, especially in urban areas, hit the poorer households the hardest as these are fundamental needs for their daily lives.  With so many basic concerns already at hand, skin health tend to be overlooked in these urban poor communities as medical fees can be expensive, let alone access to dermatological care. That said, skin health should not be overlooked, as skin issues can become a major health concern if left untreated due to limited access to quality care.

The Vaseline Healing Project kicked off in Malaysia for the first time last year, where Vaseline supported HOPE worldwide Malaysia’s medical programme that provides free access to basic healthcare as well as education about sanitation and hygiene. The first-year initiative impacted 2,016 people from underserved communities nationwide, contributing to Vaseline’s global ambition of healing the skin of 5 million people affected by poverty and emergencies.

The focus this year will be making access to basic medical and dermatological care closer to the underserved communities through several free mobile clinics presented by the Vaseline Healing Project. Targeted communities in the Sentul, Kuala Lumpur area, where HOPE worldwide Malaysia primarily serve, as well as underserved communities in major cities across the nation will be provided access to skin checks and skin health awareness talks in addition to medical counsel and other medical services such as blood glucose, BMI and blood pressure tests. In addition, Vaseline has pledged to donate RM150,000 in cash and RM50,000 worth of Vaseline products to support the year-long campaign.

Guan Lee, Head of Skincare and Deodorant Categories, Unilever (Malaysia) Holdings Sdn Bhd shares the inspiration behind the initiative: “Vaseline’s heritage of improving and restoring the skin health spans over a century across the globe. The Vaseline Healing Project furthers our commitment to sharing the restorative features, while also providing access to dermatological care for those in need.”

“We hope to close the skin health treatment gap and beyond; because with healthy skin, we can live life to the fullest. Our shared vision with HOPE worldwide Malaysia elevates our mission even further as we bring healing closer to the underserved communities this year and give them hope for a brighter future,” Guan added.

Darick Wong, Country Director of HOPE worldwide Malaysia echoed the sentiment, “Being a partner of the Vaseline Healing Project helps us serve our communities better as we provide them a more wholesome offering to improve their lives through dermatological care. This collaboration enables us to help the underserved communities to regain healthy skin, alongside our other initiatives. It’s amazing how good skin health can make a difference to one’s confidence to step into life, and we want to see more moments like this within our network across the country.”

Malaysians are invited to join in the effort to aid underserved communities in need of access to dermatological care. From now until 30 September 2018, with every purchase of a Vaseline product, RM1 will be donated to the Vaseline Healing Project.

Discovered in 1870, Vaseline Jelly is the original dry skin restorer. Utilising a unique dry skin restoring mechanism, Vaseline Jelly penetrates dry skin to create an intercellular occlusive layer deep within the affected skin and helps fill in intercellular lipids, the skin’s natural barrier to help lock in moisture.

The Vaseline Healing Project at Inanam Laut Sabah (December 2017)

02 December 2017, The Vaseline Healing Project for rural community in Inanam Laut

The Vaseline healing Project continues its impact for the rural community in Inanam Laut. Here we met again with the families and children, and we are so excited to see the healing impact on some of the children's skin condition compare with the first trip we came during June this year.

Thanks to all fellow donors who have purchased Vaseline products during the month of August which the proceeds enable us to bring the power of healing from the jar of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly to more needy community of farther places.

One of the girls who we first met in Inanam Laut, her skin condition was very bad due to an infection. Vaseline Healing Project came in a nick of time, where our volunteers educate the parents about how to take care of the hygiene of the skin condition and also introduce to them how to apply the Vaseline Jelly to prevent further infection. Eventually, after 6 months, as we meet again, we noticed the little girl's skin condition is better than before.

HOPE worldwide Malaysia is proud to be on board with Vaseline on "The Vaseline Healing Project" which is a Global CSR initiative, partnering with Direct Relief, its Global Mission is to heal the skin of 5 million people by 2020, by providing dermatological care to those affected by adverse living conditions and recovering from emergency situations.

The Vaseline Healing Project, for the first time in Malaysia. Partnering locally with prominent volunteer relief organisation HOPE worldwide Malaysia, the initiative is aimed at helping underprivileged and vulnerable communities who live in poverty, and victims of emergency situations in Malaysia, to regain healthy skin.

“HOPE worldwide Malaysia is very glad to be a partner for The Vaseline Healing Project, an amazing program where we can bring dermatological care to those in need; from the urban poor community to Orang Asli villages, and the underserved community in East Malaysia. This healing of a thousand miles from Vaseline will help bring much required improvements in skin care to many families in need,“ said Darick Wong, Country Director of HOPE worldwide Malaysia.

Since our organization's establishment in 2000, HOPE worldwide Malaysia has been bringing medical aid to urban poor community and as well the Orang Asli community through the Sentul Free Clinic of HOPE & Free Mobile Clinic. Skin infection is one of the common ailing among those who lived in poverty. Lacking of clean water and hygiene condition of the living environment are one of the main causes. It directly affected the community day to day life especially for the children. Skin infection seems not a life-threatening disease but it greatly affected a person's self-confidence and appearance.

The Vaseline Healing Project in Malaysia will support HOPE worldwide Malaysia’s Medical Program, a service for underprivileged and vulnerable communities that not only provides them access to basic healthcare, but also education about sanitation and hygiene. Vaseline is also encouraging its consumers to be a part of this initiative by providing a platform for them to help through the Vaseline Healing Project:
