Refurbishment Project for SK Kambug Hostel that hosted 127 students powered by MaybankHeart.
02 October 2017, Refurbishment Project for Sekolah Kebangsaan Kambug's Students Hostel
The children of the boarding school, SK Kambug happily carrying their new cabinets for their hostel. This is a Refurbishment Project supported by MaybankHeart where the funds were raised through this crowdfunding platform. Thanks to all donors who have donated to our campaign!
It came a long way since we first met the students in SK Kambug during the KFC Sharing Moments Food Distribution Program back in 2016. We were so impacted by the joy and simplicity of this children, and yet we see the needs of their hostel's condition to be refurbished and the change of new facilities which include the cabinets and mattresses.
Thanks to MaybankHeart for offering us the crowdfunding platform in raising a total of RM 35,443.00 for this project. Thanks to our coordinator Stephen in sourcing the cabinets and other materials and also manpower in implementing this project.
With the coordination by our faithful coordinators Stephen and Li Kean, we were so grateful by their dedication in facilitating our community works in Kuching including gathering the volunteers from Swinburne University through establishing the Swinburne Charity Cruiser Club. Swinburne Charity Cruiser Club volunteers have been the greatest support to the community programs we are doing at SK Kambug, which include KFC Sharing Moments Food Distribution Program and MY Reading Program.
A little background brief about SK Kambug when we first met them in 2016:
The hostel of SK Kambug, which is a second home for a total of 127 students from low income families is in poor and vulnerable condition that needs immediate attention.
Sekolah Kebangsaan Kambug which is a boarding school, has a total of 155 students who majority are from the Bidayuh tribe whose residents are at the hill sides. To reach the school, the students need to walk a 2-hour walking journey through the steep trails.
To ease the challenges and obstacles that are stopping these kids from coming to school, a hostel was built since 20 years ago, for these students to stay through the weekdays while they only will go back home with their parents during the weekends.
These students’ parents worked as farmers and construction workers who earn less than RM 500.00 per month. These parents have high hopes on their children to be educated and one day could break through the poverty cycle.
